Australian PR Granted after 1 July 2007

These Australian permanent residents may qualify for Australian citizenship if they have lived:

  • in Australia as an Australian permanent resident for at least 12 months prior to lodgement with no more than 3 months spent outside the country, and

  • lawfully in Australia for at least 4 years including any time spent on a temporary visa with no more than 12 months spent outside the country

As of 1 January 2023 some Subclass 189 visa holders (granted in the New Zealand stream) will not be required to meet the above residence requirements to qualify for Australian citizenship.

Australian PR Granted to Certain New Zealand Citizens

From 1 January 2023 the following will not need to meet the above residence requirements to qualify for Australian citizenship:

  • primary and/or family members holding a subclass 189 (New Zealand stream) visa (excludes diplomats or consular representatives of New Zealand, their spouse and children), and

  • their subclass 189 visa was approved between 31 December 2021 and 1 July 2023

For the purpose of obtaining Australian citizenship, this cohort is deemed to have become an Australian permanent resident on 1 January 2022. This means they could be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship as soon as their 189 permanent residence visa is granted.
